Counselors must go beyond traditional responsibilities, becoming integral to the educational and personal growth of students. Their duties should include:
- Hosting Assemblies with Inspirational Speakers: These could feature first responders, trade school representatives, local business leaders, entrepreneurs, and motivational speakers to broaden students’ horizons.
- Collaborating with Teachers and Parents: Counselors should regularly communicate with teachers about students’ grades, classroom involvement, and challenges, while also engaging with parents to align on the best path forward for their children.
- Building Trust with Students: They should be approachable, offering students a safe space to discuss academic, personal, and social issues. A trusted ally, they must be firm, honest, and encouraging while guiding students toward success.
- Addressing Modern Challenges: With today’s students facing obstacles like social media pressures, poor role models, and a deteriorating cultural landscape, counselors need to be vigilant in spotting depression, substance abuse, gang affiliations, and issues stemming from poor parenting.
A Comprehensive Approach to Safety
The rise in school shootings—83 incidents reported as of December 21, 2024—demands action. America Together Coalition advocates for equipping counselors and teachers with the tools and training necessary to protect their schools, including:
- Rigorous Training Programs: Interested staff should undergo thorough training in physical defense, de-escalation techniques, and the proper use of tools such as pepper spray, tasers, and firearms. This training would include classroom instruction and hands-on practice, akin to a condensed law enforcement course.
- Visible Deterrents: Schools should have visible posters at entrances warning that staff members are trained to handle potential threats. Additionally, messaging inside schools should promote a zero-tolerance policy for unruly behavior, ensuring students understand the consequences of their actions.
Valuing and Supporting Counselors
Counselors’ expanded responsibilities must be matched by:
- Increased Compensation: A higher workload and on-call responsibilities necessitate competitive pay.
- Ongoing Education: Regular professional development and advanced training must be integral to their roles.
The Vision for Change
Counselors should become respected role models, visible on campuses as problem solvers and motivators. Their presence would foster a positive environment for students, teachers, and the broader community.
