A friend recently asked how America Together Coalition can truly bring Americans together when I spend so much time criticizing Donald Trump. It’s a fair question.
My answer is simple: bringing Americans together does not mean ignoring serious problems. It means confronting them honestly while working toward a more united future. My goal is to help Americans pull in the same direction—with civility, respect, and a shared commitment to our country. That requires addressing the actions and leadership that I believe have contributed significantly to our current division.
I will also address the challenges within the Democratic Party. Like any major political party, it has factions that range from moderate to more ideological voices. While I may disagree strongly with some of its more progressive elements, I believe it is important to listen to all perspectives. Productive dialogue often begins by understanding viewpoints different from our own, and sometimes common ground can be found through thoughtful discussion and compromise.
At the same time, I believe Donald Trump has had an especially divisive impact on American politics. His leadership style, rhetoric, and focus on personal loyalty have deepened political polarization and reshaped the Republican Party in profound ways. For many Americans—including myself—this has raised serious concerns about the future of conservative principles, democratic norms, and national unity.
That is why I made the difficult decision to leave the Republican Party on March 1, 2025. I grew up believing in a conservatism rooted in character, truth, personal responsibility, and principled leadership. In my view, those values have been overshadowed by a movement centered more on loyalty to one individual than to enduring American ideals.
Today, both major parties face significant challenges. Too often, Americans on all sides seek information that confirms their beliefs rather than challenges them. This deepens division and makes meaningful dialogue more difficult.
Despite these challenges, I remain hopeful. History reminds us that political opponents can disagree passionately while still respecting one another. We would do well to remember the example of leaders like Ronald Reagan and Tip O’Neill, who could debate fiercely and still maintain a personal friendship.
That spirit of civility is what America Together Coalition stands for.
